In recognition of the tragic Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings in 1945 and their effect on the survivors and future generations of Japanese and Japanese Americans, JAMsj will host a showing of the animated documentary/drama Hibakusha on August 10th, 2019 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM.
Join Directors Steve Nguyen and Choz Belen as they discuss the making of their animated documentary/drama .
The film centers on Kaz Suyeishi, a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, as she recounts her memories of the bombing and its aftermath. Suyeishi was born in Pasadena, California and moved to Japan as a child with her family. She was one of many Japanese Americans who lived in Japan during the war. The film uses a unique animation art style to bring this important story to life and serves as a reminder of the horrors of nuclear warfare and the struggles that the survivors have experienced for decades after the war.
Tears of the Moon, Haiku on the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima, Hiroko Takanashi's story and poetry translated by Fr. Eric Freed, will be given away at no cost to everyone attending the JAMsj movie event as long as supplies last.
“Hiroko Takahashi was 15 years old and was present at the bombing of Hiroshima. This book tells the story of Hiroko and her sister's survival of the bombing and what they experienced immediately afterwards. Hiroko, 60 years later, retells her experiences in her Haiku writings.”
