JAMSJ Youth

Short-term and Long-term Youth Volunteer programs

JAMsj offers many different opportunities to connect youth to our work. JAMsj’s current program connects youth to volunteer opportunities at JAMsj, and offers both short and long-term volunteer positions. These opportunities allow youth to interact with leaders within the JAMsj community and develop their leadership skills.

Short-term involvement:

JAMsj volunteers guides short-term volunteers to:

  • lead culture day craft projects

  • lead activities for cultural days

  • help on clean up days

Long-term involvement:

JAMsj provides training to

  • become a docent

  • work in the museum store

  • or as a receptionist

  • represent JAMsj at culture days

  • work on a project for 2023 AAPI Heritage Month

Please read the Safe Involvement with Minors Policy.  Parental permission is required for minors to participate in all volunteer opportunities at JAMsj.

Interested? Please complete the online volunteer form on the Volunteer page. Please indicate that you are a minor in the comments section. You will be required to complete an orientation/training session in order to volunteer.

NIKKEI COMMUNITY INTERNSHIP

THE NCI PROGRAM

The Nikkei Community Internship is an eight-week program designed to promote awareness of the three remaining Japantowns (San Francisco, San Jose and Los Angeles) and to get (College-Aged) youth more involved in the Japanese-American community.

The San Jose NCI program is structured so that the interns have a chance to meet the various community organization and their leadership. They also have a chance to meet the political leaders who work closely with the community. They are then assigned to one of the community-based organization where they will work on various projects with a mentor assigned by the organization.

One day of the week is reserved for leadership training, during which all of the Norcal interns gather for workshops and meetings with community leaders. Interns attend three statewide retreats, one in each Japantown, during which both the Southern California and Northern California interns meet and work together.
